GT oil change, OOPS! almost...

Started to do my first oil change on the new GT, got my oil change stuff together, oil(5w20 mobile 1), motorcraft filter and drain pan.

A thought occurred to me as I crawled under the car to start, "how much oil does my drain pan hold?"

Car holds 8 quarts total and since the filter isn't very large there must be at least 7 quarts in the pan if not a little more.

Checked the pan and it has hash marks telling you the oil level drained out and it is only marked to 7 quarts, might do but might not, plus it would be full to the top and be a real PITA to move without spilling when full.

So, I'm glad I checked it!

Ended up sacrificing my car wash bucket to catch the oil drained from the engine.

The GT isn't quite as big of a PITA to change the oil on as my '12 V6 was but is still a little bit of a challenge to do without making a mess.

And has anyone else noticed that the filter on the car from the factory is slightly taller than the replacement motorcraft filter? Strange...

changing oil on the pony is probably one of the easiest cars I've ever done. I can do everything in 30 to 45 mins, depending on how long I let the oil drain (drip....drip....drip....). Also, no mess. Zip loc baggie trick. Never ever a mess.

+1 then can drain off 6 qts for instance, dump oil pan, then drain the rest. Or you can easily collect a sample to analyze and determine if you need to change the oil yet!

I pull up to the service desk, give the service writer the keys, go get a cup of joe, walk out to look at the new Stangs and F-150's, and 30 - 40 minutes later I'm on my way.

I used to change my own oil, but for $39.95 I get a tire rotation, oil/filter, everything checked out, and I don't get dirty. As I have became more mature (re: older) I see more the advantage of allowing someone else get under there.

Don't run synthetic I assume based on $40 oil change?

Can't say I blame you for not getting under the car, I like to do my own to ensure the oil I want goes in and at the right level... but I'll use my couple free oil changes from my dealership for sure

The $39.95 "The Works" package at the ford dealer includes synthetic blend oil. Granted, that price is for up to 5 quarts of oil. With our cars needing 8, be prepared for the dealer to charge you for the extra 3 quarts.

My car OTOH, being the track-pack, needs 8.5 quarts of 5W50 full synthetic. So no matter what way I look at it, mine is about a $100 oil change... even doing it myself.

^ yep. Cost is irrelevant when it comes to 1x or 2x a year changes for me. 100 bucks for some nice quality time with my car, plus Amsoil for her blood? Priceless. No one else touches my car...

Why 8.5 quarts?

Manual says Track Pack takes the same 8 quarts just like a regular GT.

And my 2 gallon former wash bucket worked just fine.

I do need to get myself a bigger funnel for filling the oil though, dripped a little and had to clean it up.

Took mine to the dealer yesterday... $22 later, new oil! and had a chance to fully examine the new ST Focus... Win-Win!

This page is from the 2014 owners manual, says 8 quarts, Track pack or GT, just a different weight oil.

Printing error? Looks like they fixed the cap vs manual (5w20/5w50) thing this year but maybe forgot to update additional volume needed b/c the instructions for adding a cooler said to use an additional half quart. Or maybe they just figured out eventually that the additional oil wasn't necessary.

Is it an additional 1/2 quart or are the instructions just replacing oil that is lost in the installation?

Track Pack cars come with a supplement to the owner's manual where it specifies the different fluids and capacities.

Hmm...

The only supplement listed on the Ford owner site is for the GT500 for the 2014 MY, nothing for the Track Pack.

My Quick Lane service manager commited to the advertised $47.95 Works (Full Synthetic 5w-50) service cost for my 2014 Track Pack. He said they now buy their oils in bulk to get a cut in pricing. He offered Motorcraft or Mobil 1 for the same money. I'll stick with Motorcraft.
