Tried to replace my battery today and failed :(

My stock battery on my 05 GT is dieing on me.

A few days ago it needed to be jumped and there's wierd stuff growing on the terminals.

Any how I went to my local Autozone and they looked up my car model/make and came up with this:

http://www.autozone.com/selectedZip,.../selectZip.htm

It's the Duralast brand battery.

Anyhow I proceeded to install the battery and to my suprise, it didn't fit

In the tray that holds the battery, there are these 2 plastic tab things that slide out. The Duralast battery is longer than the stock one so it was actually sitting on top of the tabs. No problems, the tabs slide out.

Next problem.

The posts on the battery are further apart than the stock battery and the cables would not span that distance.

Aghhhhh, I had to take it off and reinstall the stock battery.

What battery should I buy that will fit properly - OEM ?

Which Optima battery should I get?

Can you give me a product ID please?

This is for an 05 GT (in case there are differences in 06,07,08, etc).

I thought Optima batteries didn't fit well in the battery tray?

What function does the battery blanket serve?

Do I need a yellow top or red top?

My pony is only moderately modded (CAI, gears, UDP).

Probably helps keep the heat away from the battery? Red top has more cranking power than the yellow. Buy which ever you like or can afford the most. Yellow top was $179, so these batteries aren't cheap.

I suggest Interstate batteries.
They are made by Johnson Controls (as are many others).
My factory upgraded battery is also made by Johnson.
I have never had a problem.
I have seen Interstate batteries that have been discharged completely many times last for as much as 10 years or more.
That's just my personal experience.

++++

When my stocker starts to go south, I will be looking at the interstate batteries.

If you live near a Sears , they have good batteries with an excellent warranty and they'll put one in that fits ...

I bought an Optima Red Top at Advance Auto...I had it for a year and it flat out died and wouldnt take a charge...I brought it back to Advance, they looked up my receipt, said it was still under the three year warranty....went to the shelf, gave me a brand new one, took the old one...no questions asked....went better than I could have imagined.

Pep Boys has a much better deal on batteries than Advanced Auto. I recently bought a Bosch with 8 year warranty and 700+ Cranking Amps and 3 year free replacement for $72.95.

I guess it's all preference...I have used Optima Red tops in the past on my last several vehicles with great luck (with that one time being the lone exception), so I personally will continue to use them...

I know it may sound stupid, but if I had a nice S197 with a clean engine bay that was stock, I would go buy a new Ford Motorcraft battery.. just my .02

That may be the cause of the problem. Did you clean the corrosion off the battery's terminals and the cable clamps? Baking soda mixed with water is the recommended cleaning solution.

Yellow Top is good, but you only need the Red Top. Especially since the color of your car is well.......Red. You don't need to pay the extra for the side mounts. The Blanket will fit, but unneccessary, and looks fugily on anything other than the Stock Battery. If mine was a classic Show car, then OEM all the way. But for a Show and "GO" car, Optima, has long been the only choice for Muscle Cars. You have UDP's and CAI. and Gears.........so far. Don't short change yourself by buying something less. While I do agree that the Interstate is a good product, I use them in my Truck and Old Bird, they are not for our S197's.

Red top if your car is a D/D,or yellow top if it s a garage queen like mine.

Same thing happend to me about a month ago. The autozone clerk told me their computer is mislabled and it's a know problem. I ended up getting a Duralast 47-DL which fit like a glove. Take it back for the one in the link below.

Stock is BXT-96R. That's what came in my 07 GT.

Ford won't use Optimas because the Optima AGM batteries won't function in all climate conditions.
