one thing that scares me bout the future cars is if we get hydrogen fuel cells or hybrid engines or whatever... what will happen to that good ol' V8 growl?

Exactly. Last weekend, during the F1 race (during which McLaren SPANKED Ferrari's *** on their home turf at Monza, incidentally), BMW had an add for their hydrogen powered 7 series car. They basically said "the car's ready and you can get one as soon as the infrastructure is in place". 4.4 liter V8. I think IC engines will be around for a while...and I'm just glad I own a Mustang with a V8...which I'll only sell as I'm taking delivery of another V8-powered car...or a V10 (Viper)
