Hello there,

I'm thinkin about to upgrade my shaker 500 to a 1000. Perhaps I will be lucky to get a cheap 1000 on ebay or elsewhere. Did anybody have experience by installing a 1000?
Or do I else have options to get easiely installed a subwoofer to the 500?

Is it possible to upgrade manually the mobile phone option to a shaker 500? Thanks.

Adding an aftermarket sub and amp to the S500 is not too difficult. Actually upgrading the S500 to an S1000 system is far more costly than its worth. Besides the subs, and 4 amps you need the head unit and a wiring harness. It is a very involved upgrade to do it like factory.

For about the same money as a Shaker 1000, I upgraded my whole system except the head unit. Attached are pictures of the 12"subwoofer, both amps and the replacement speakers. I did a single Infinity 12"dvc Kappa Perfect sub in a Scosche box powered by a 420Wx1 MTX 421D amp and a Boss 20 capacitor, 2 - 8" svc CDT subs in the doors, which were an almost direct fit (minor heat shaping of factory sub exclosure) powered by a 70Wx2 MTX 282 amp and 4 Infinity Kappa 682.7cf's in the doors and rear deck powered by the head unit with 150hz bass blocks. Total cost $1145, plus about 20 hours on the install. Other than there being a volume difference between radio and CD's, the head unit is really good. Having spent some time in my buddy's car with a Shaker 1000, there is no comparison, my system is much clearer, louder and has tighter and deeper bass. One 12" sub is better than 2-10's any day, and as a bonus, with the Scosche box, golf clubs still fit in the trunk - they do not with the Shaker 1000.

That's quite debatable on many fronts. I'd prefer to go with 2-10's, though I use the Scoshe box also.

That said, how do those CDT's sound? That's one of maybe 4 drivers that I haven't attempted to mount in my doors yet, and may see how well they do.

I really like the CDT's a lot, not that I have heard too many other 8" in a Mustang - only the RF Punch's and MTX 4500's, they are very flat and do a pretty good job on reproducing the 50-150hz range tones; like most 8", they fall off on the real deep stuff. They seem pretty efficient and 70Wx2 rms amp is plenty of power. I'm happy with the overall package I have, keeping in mind that, at middle age, I now prefer sound quality to raw volume. Everyone has their opinions on woofer size and quantity - my comment was more of one good 12" is better than the 2-10" in the Shaker 1000 as there is no dual 10" aftermarket box that fits in the right corner like the Scosche or Shaker do. In general, I am partial to the tone depth and volume of the 12" over the cone speed and stiffness of the 10's.

How do you like the 682.7cfs? For some reason, Crutchfield claims they don't fit in the doors. Did you have any problem installing them? Thanks.

FWIW, I had kappas in another vehicle, and the highs/mids sounded INCREDIBLE, but they had almost no bass. However, that was easily fixed with a Basslink.

I just ordered a set of References for the stang, as the guy at crutchfield said that they would be much like the kappas in terms of sound range. So, I figured that the factory door subs would be good for the lows (as they already are), and the infinity's will allow me to get clearer voices when the volume is turned up, which is usually a problem with verts.

I'm not sure why they say the kappa's don't fit, but be warned that you do need to wire in an included cross-over with the kappas. It's not a big deal, but the box does need to go somewhere.

Honestly, from what I've read on this forums and from what I've been told by Crutchfield, it seems like the 6812cf references are great speakers and, at $70/pr, the price is incredible and probably the best bang for the buck.

The question to ask is: is it worth the extra $80/pr to get the kappas. And, at least from what I can tell, I think that that answer may be no.

The reason Crutchfield says some of the 6x8's don't fit is they require some plastic "tabs" to be cut off the factory mounting brackets. VERY easy to do. They only assist on the assembly line to make the speakers go in quicker- totally unneeded.

thanks for the advice and info. Always glad to listen to the opinions of fellow Mustang enthusiasts. I think I'll get the Infinity 6812cf references, since they are half the price and should work fine for what I intend.

Looking for thoughts on the following setup...
Head Unit: Pioneer AVIC Z-1
Subs: Two Pioneer Slim Mount TS-SW841Ds
Speakers: Four Infinity 6812cf Reference Speakers
Amplifier: One Infinity 5761a (56wx4/117wx2)
(Open to suggestions on the Amp..)

I love the 682.7cf's. As Infinity said the reaseon they don't fit as it, is there is an extra mounting tab that has to be clipped with pliers. The Kappa's and Reference's use different tweeters and magnets, which accounts fo the difference in price. The 6812's are nice speakers for $70. The Infinity amp is neat in that it will power all six speakers in the car at once. If you are not going to add a trunk sub, you may want to reconsider those Pioneer slim mounts.

Honestly, if the kappa's were on sale (crutchfield sometimes has a buy one, get one 50% off on them), I would probably reconsider.

But, with the old model references at 30% off and the Kappa's are regular price, I personally can't justify an extra $80 a pair (but, that's dependent on how I'm going to listen to the music...someone else may find them worth the money)
